LOVE is coming to Shore Drive!

2/20/2020

Call for artists for Shore Drive LOVE art work.

Virginia Beach, VA:
LOVE is coming to Shore Drive! As part of the 50th Anniversary of the Virginia is for Lovers slogan the
Virginia Tourism Corp offered a grant incentive for the Love Art Signs.  Our beautiful Shore Drive was selected to receive a grant! Now we enter the design phase of the project.

The Bayfront Advisory Commission in partnership with Ocean Park Civic League is seeking a qualified artist or artist-led team to provide a unique and site-specific LOVE sign at the foot of Pleasure House Point Park on Shore Drive.

The LOVE sign goal is to welcome and reflect the spirit of the Shore Drive community. After a shortlist is decided, the community will publicly vote on the final selection of the sign. The sign will be completed by the selected artist during the months of March and April 2020.

About the location for the LOVE sign
The LOVE sign location is at the foot of Pleasure House Point Park on Shore Drive. It is within the Ocean Park neighborhood and across from Baylake Pines Neighborhood. Shore Drive is a unique area that has a strong history as a part of the city of Virginia Beach.
A book on the history of Ocean Park is available.

Celebrating the life of David Bain

2/11/2020

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of David Bain.  David was an honorary member and fond supporter of Ocean Park Volunteer Rescue Squad. We met David while eating breakfast at Sunrise Cafe each morning. At some point, every member had met him, sat with him, and shared jokes with him. He expressed an interest in what we did and who we were. He started riding along with our team and learning what we do first hand. David was even voted in as an honorary member by the squad's membership.

One day, during a ride-along, David looked around the station and mater-of-factly stated that we needed new paint and furniture in our day room. With his gift, we were repainting and hauling in new furniture. In 2016 we abruptly lost two ambulances due to mechanical issues. David recognized the urgent need to provide life-saving care to the community. He and Robert Bain stepped up and purchased two ambulances for our station. We continued to meet him for breakfast every morning while driving our new ambulances. David will be missed greatly by our squad and the city.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at H.D. Oliver Funeral Home, Laskin Road Chapel.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, February 13, 2020, at 11:00 AM at H. D. Oliver Funeral Home, Laskin Road Chapel.  Burial will follow in Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery.
